Cheer Bows. Delivered.

 

If you have a cheerleader in the house, you already know: bows are part of the uniform. Between practices, competitions, school colors, and team spirit days, it feels like we’re always reaching for another one.

Instead of constantly buying new bows, we decided to start making some ourselves. The best part? The supplies are simple, affordable, and delivered straight to our door.

Once we had the basics, making cheer bows turned into a quick project we could do together — and now we can create bows for any team, color, or event.

If you want to make your own cheer bows, these are the simple supplies we use.

Supplies:

👉 3 inch grosgrain ribbon

👉 Heat Transfer Vinyl (glitter)

👉 Self-adhesive rhinestone ribbon (2-rows/.2 in)

👉 Double sided tape

👉 4 in. zip ties

👉 Hair ties

👉 Zipper pouches

Step-by-Step Instructions

Once everything arrived, it was time to turn a box of supplies into something the girls could wear with pride. Below is a simple step-by-step of how I made the bows, with photos along the way.

Step 1

Design, cut, and weed your HTV. There are lots of bow templates available in Cricut Design Space, and you can adjust them based on your bow size. Don’t forget to mirror your image for HTV.

Step 2

Cut your ribbon to 29 inches. This length worked well for full loops and tails, but you can adjust depending on your preference. Fold the ribbon in half and use your heat press to create a visible center crease.

Step 3

Place the ribbon on your standard grip cutting mat (an older mat works great). Align the center fold with a grid line. Measure 3 inches from the center fold, then fold both tails inward so they cross just below the center line.

Step 4

Iron on any embellishments for the loops. I pressed mine for about 12 seconds on the highest heat setting.

Step 5

Add a small piece of double-sided tape at the center fold, between the crossed ribbon layers. This helps hold the shape as you bunch the bow. Line up the bottom of the crossed ribbon with the bottom of the back ribbon.

Step 6

Keeping a firm grip at the center, work the ribbon back and forth to create folds and valleys.

Step 7

While holding the center crease, place a zip tie and hair tie around the middle. Tighten the zip tie enough to hold the shape but leave room for adjustments. Once you’re happy, pull the zip tie as tight as possible and align it at the back of the bow. Trim off the excess.

Step 8

Iron HTV onto the ribbon tails, making sure everything is aligned. Use a ruler and rotary cutter to trim the tails evenly, then lightly seal the edges with a lighter.

Step 9

Finish by adding self-adhesive rhinestones for some extra sparkle.

Step 10 (Bonus)

Store the bow in a zipper pouch to protect it when your cheerleader tosses it into a (very dirty) cheer bag 😉

In the end, this project wasn’t just about cheer bows—it was about finding a way to show up. With everything delivered to our doorstep, a small pocket of time turned into something meaningful for my daughter and her team.
